The Swiss watch brand Balmain has achieved a major success. On the strength of its eternally elegant and captivating designs, and with its typical stylishness and skill in lending its watches an unusual shape or curve, it has once again demonstrated its inventiveness and creativity in launching as a world first two collections – Amphora BD and Elysée BD – featuring the new Big Date or BD mechanism which has recently been patented.

For Balmain, Big Date represents a new milestone in the brand’s history. With this new design the date is far easier to read. Thanks to the ingenuity of ETA in Grenchen, Switzerland, where this patented date system was developed, the size of the aperture is 90% greater than the original movement. This means in turn that the numerals can be far larger. But better still, thanks to this incredible new system, Balmain is proud to announce a world first which simply makes life easier – especially since the date changes instantly at midnight.

With over 160 years of joint experience and corporate culture behind it, Balmain wished to pay tribute to the enthusiasm and know-how of the watchmakers who developed this new date mechanism by keeping the name they used for it during the developmental stage: BD (Big Date). Which explains why the brand decided to add the tag “BD” to the names of the models fitted with this date display mechanism with two large, superimposed discs.

It is remarkable to see, through the Amphora collection, how Balmain can create a series of avant-garde models. The exquisite amphora-shaped silhouette of the dial, which has been an unprecedented succcess for Montres Pierre Balmain, has now evolved. And the Amphora BD models have been fitted with the Big Date mechanism involving two large, superimposed discs set at 3 o’clock. In addition to the energy and dynamism of its voluptuous, lavish lines, the Amphora BD collection features all the characteristics that Balmain aficionados love: silvered dial with arabesque decoration, tested water-resistance to 5 atm, bracelet and case in polished steel, screw-in case-back engraved with the brand’s name, cabochon stone set in the crown. Amphora BD, a Big Date that will definitely go down in history! As will the Elysée BD models by Balmain, which also feature this new mechanism.
