Calatrava Ref. 5296The Calatrava Ref. 5296 is at once timeless and contemporary. In designing its case and dial, Patek Philippe was influenced by the famous Ref. 96 from the 1930s, which is in the permanent collection of the Patek Philippe Museum. Accommodating the trend toward somewhat larger watches, the diameter of the case was slightly increased to 38 mm. The silhouette of the 18K white gold case is relatively slim, and the bezel and flanks are polished. The two-tone dial features an intricate navy-blue pattern that appears two-dimensional. True to the Calatrava philosophy, blued-steel feuille (leaf-shaped) hands are
set against a bright background for easy reading. With its graphic discipline,
the Ref. 5296 will appeal to modern design and architecture connoisseurs as well
as to those who appreciate the power of minimalism. The watch is worn on a blue
alligator strap with a white gold fold-over clasp. A sapphire-crystal case back
