The Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace is a rugby union, football (soccer) and
athletics stadium in Phokeng near Rustenburg, South Africa.
The Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace is situated in Phokeng, in the heart
of the Royal Bafokeng Nation, about 90 minutes from
Johannesburg.
The Sports Palace was originally commissioned by Kgosi Lebone
II, the previous King of the Royal Bafokeng Nation. Designed and built as a
soccer and rugby venue, the stadium first opened in 2000. The cost of R
120 million was 100% funded by the Royal Bafokeng Administration.
In 2004, the Sports Palace became part of South Africa’s bid for
the 2010 FIFA World Cup as the venue in the host city of Rustenburg.
In preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup the stadium increased its capacity
from 39,000 to 44,389 and now boasts 24 suites. New electronic
scoreboards, floodlights and a public address system were added to enable the
Sports Palace to host the world’s best footballers and their fans. The new level
of the lighting is above 2,000 lux, enough to support high definition
television.
Two enormous generators provide backup power for the entire stadium complex.
The stadium upgrades cost R460 million, 60% of which was funded by the Royal
Bafokeng Administration, and 40% by the South African government.
