The continent of Australia has been inhabited for over 40,000 years by Indigenous Australians. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies federated and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. The current population of over 20 million is concentrated mainly in the large coastal cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. Australia is divided into 6 states: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania and 2 territories; the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory. Australia is divided into three separate time zones. Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST)Covers the eastern states of Queensland, New South Wales (with the exception of the town of Broken Hill), Victoria, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory. AEST is equal to Greenwich Mean Time plus 10 hours (GMT +10). Australian Central Standard Time (ACST)Covers the state of South Australia, the town of Broken Hill in western New South Wales and the Northern Territory. ACST is equal to Greenwich Mean Time plus 9 ˝ hours (GMT +9 ˝). Australian Western Standard Time (AWST)Covers Western Australia. AWST is equal to Greenwich Mean Time plus 8 hours (GMT +8). Australian states except Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia have daylight saving during the summer months. Western Australia operated experimental Summer Time from 2006 - 2009.
