Salford is a city in Greater Manchester in the north-west of England.
Salford's eastern boundary separates Salford from the City of Manchester. The central districts of the two cities are divided by the River Irwell.
With neighbouring towns Salford forms the metropolitan borough of the City of Salford. At the 2001 census the metropolitan borough had a population of 216,103 whilst Salford itself had a population of over 72,000.
Salford is about 320 km. (200 miles) north west of London. With excellent road and public transport links to all parts of the UK, the city is well placed as a visitor and commercial centre.
Manchester International Airport, gateway to over 200 international destinations, is just a few miles away.
The city of Salford covers 96 km (37 square miles) and the five districts of Salford, Eccles, Worsley, Irlam & Cadishead, and Swinton & Pendlebury.
As one of the world's first industrial cities, Salford is flooded with historic achievements – including the world’s first free public library.
