American Airlines is the largest airline in the United States. By many measures, including passenger traffic, fleet size and number of employees, American is the largest airline in the world.
American Airlines History
American Airlines developed from a conglomeration of small airlines companies and began flights to Europe and Japan in the mid-1980s. In 1990 American Airlines bought the Eastern Airlines' Central and South American routes. American Airlines negotiated the purchase of Trans World Airlines but it began losing money in the wake of the TWA merger and the September 11 attacks (in which two of its aircraft were involved). American Airlines has undergone cost-cutting measures and eventually rebounded, expanding its service into new markets.
