bmi History
In 1938 the Air Schools Limited was established, specialising in flying instruction for RAF pilots. More than 10 years later, Air Schools Ltd diversifies operations and formed Derby Aviation and Wolverhampton Aviation based at Burnaston airfield, near Derby. Both companies offered ad-hoc passengers and cargo charters with Derby Aviation specialising in civil aircraft maintenance and aircraft brokerage. 1958 marks the start of inclusive tour holidays to France, Spain, Italy, Austria and Switzerland. A year later, Derby Aviation was renamed Derby Airways and the network expanded to cover more UK destinations. In 1964, Derby airways changed name to British Midland Airways and the route expanded during the years.
