Bedford Square
Bloomsbury, London WC1
Bedford Square, Bloomsbury, London WC1
Bedford Square, built in 1775 - 80, is only complete Georgian square in London. All the elegant brick houses have distinctive entrances, decorated with Coade stone. This hard-wearing artificial stone was made in Lambeth, to a formula that remained secret for generations. The fine buildings were once inhabited by the aristocracy but today they all house offices. Visitors to Bedford Square can still catch as glimpse of some of the beautiful Georgian interiors, with their exquisite moulded ceilings, through lighted windows. Although Bedford Square was once the haunt of book-publishers, most of these have now moved to less expensive addresses. Nos. 34 - 36 Bedford Square houses the Architectural Association. Many noted London architects have passed through here, including Richard Rogers, who designed the City's striking Lloyd's Building.
