About Yumi
The Uttam London brand was founded over 10 years ago by Uttam Nepal. In 1994 he
was selling knitwear from his home country of Nepal in Camden Market, London.
The fashion at the time for hand-made ethnic clothing made his collection
increasingly popular towards the end of the 1990s and the brand enjoyed
considerable growth. Inspired by the East, the Uttam designs embrace the
traditions and beauty of Nepal, India and Japan. The in-house design team use
techniques such as patchwork, tie-dye, applique, hand-stitched embellishments
using beads, sequins and jewels, embroidery, printed knitwear, chiffons and
silks to create the unique Uttam style. The brand acquired a reputation for its
vibrant colours, and quickly became widely recognised for its eye-catching
women's and children's wear.
The continuing growth and success of the brand led to the development of the
Uttam Direct website, and the launch of the stylish new Yumi brand in 2007. Yumi
draws inspiration from London street style, combined with emerging trends and
offers a liberated collection that appeals to the style conscious consumer with
an eye for intricacy, creativity and quality. The Uttam and Yumi brands are both
'fast fashion' labels, which mean they provide the most up-to-date styles,
colours, and fabrics. The ranges are developed in close contact with the
factories - often involving several sample stages until the design is perfected.
