City of Montreal, Canada
Montreal is the second largest city in Canada and the largest city in
the province of Quebec. Originally called Ville-Marie, or "City of
Mary", the city takes its present name from Mont-Royal, the
triple-peaked hill located in the heart of the city, whose name was also
initially given to the island on which the city is located.
The Port of Montreal is the largest inland port in the world handling 26
million tonnes of cargo annually. As one of the most important ports in
Canada, it remains a trans-shipment point for grain, sugar, petroleum
products, machinery, and consumer goods. For this reason, Montreal is
the railway hub of Canada and has always been an extremely important
rail city; it is home to the headquarters of the Canadian National
Railway.
Montreal has two international airports, one for passenger flights only,
and the other for cargo. Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International
Airport (also known as Dorval Airport) in the City of Dorval serves all
commercial passenger traffic and is the headquarters for Air Canada and
Air Transat.
Nicknamed la ville aux cent clochers ("the city of a hundred bell
towers"), Montreal is renowned for its churches. The city has four Roman
Catholic basilicas: Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral, the
aforementioned Notre-Dame Basilica, St. Patrick's Basilica, and Saint
Joseph's Oratory. The Oratory is the largest church in Canada, with the
second largest copper dome in the world after that of Saint Peter's
Basilica in Rome.
