Located on the banks of the Missouri river in the centre of the
state, Jefferson City is the hub of state government.
Jefferson City was established by an act of the U.S. Congress on December 31,
1821.
Many of the original settlers came from Virginia in the vicinity of Monticello,
the home of Thomas Jefferson, and were in fact friends of the former President.
The City of Jefferson, named in his honour, was incorporated in 1825, four years
after its founding.
