Helena is conveniently located
between two beautiful national parks. Glacier National Park is just 185
miles northwest of Helena, while Yellowstone National Park is 175 miles
south.
Yellowstone is the world’s oldest national park and is famous for
its many geysers including the legendary Old Faithful. Glacier is a million-acre
park featuring enormous mountains, beautiful lakes, lush valleys and a handful
of glaciers.
From 1886 until the creation of the National Park Service in
1916 the United States Army was responsible for the administration and
management of Yellowstone National Park.
A virtual stroll along the sidwalks of Fort Yellowstone takes
you back to when the West was being tamed, the national park idea was new, and
visitors travelled dusty roads in horse-drawn carriages. Explore life at Fort
Yellowstone and discover how the U.S. Army saved one of this nation's most
treasured places - Yellowstone National Park.
